From Alumni To Intern  By Beku

Hi, my name is Beku, and I am a former Alexander Academy student.

I am now happy to be back on campus, working as an intern in the marketing and admissions office.  

At fifteen, my passion for living abroad seemed to have startled my parents. Pursuing an education in an unfamiliar and culturally different environment was a lifelong dream of a small-town girl like me. As my favourite cook at the time, Anthony Bourdain, puts it, “If I am an advocate for anything, it is to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk-in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It is a plus for everybody.” In other words, in a highly globalized world, where you can obtain information about anything from the internet, I realized I never want to sell myself short by staying. So, when my cousin, who was studying International Relations at UBC, called, and offered to let me stay with her in Vancouver, I jumped to seize the opportunity.

It has been 6 years since I moved here, and I have overcome various hardships to become the person I am today. I believe an investment in a dream is an investment worth pursuing. Throughout this journey of reflection, I am starting to understand who I was before and who I want to become.  

In 2018, I graduated from the Alexander Academy. I significantly improved my English during my stay here, thanks to the fantastic and friendly teachers who taught me effectively. Hanging out with teachers and classmates was one of my fondest recollections. After graduating from high school, I attended Alexander College and studied business management.

During my college years, I learned business fundamentals, such as market research, marketing campaigns, and strategies. I am currently enrolled at the University of British Columbia, majoring in Business Management and minoring in Economics. After graduation, I intend to pursue a master’s degree while also working on co-ops. After finishing my degree, I hope to work as a Business Analyst or Consultant in the business industry.  

Therefore, my internship with Alexander Academy is an excellent opportunity for me to advance my career and gain valuable work experience. I would like to express my gratitude to Alexander Academy and the faculty for their support of me and my future.
