The history of Halloween!
Halloween is a holiday celebrated on the 31st of October every year. The tradition originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
According to Celtic mythology, the veil between this world and the other worlds thinned down during this night. This means that it makes it easier for spirits and departed ancestors to return. As a result, people use this time to get on the good side of the departed ones by offering them food.
Halloween has now become a day filled with activities like trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, events, and gatherings, playing dress up as ghosts and zombies and eating treats. Modern-day trick-or-treating is an amalgamation of various traditions.
Ancient Celts dressed up as evil spirits to confuse demons. In medieval Europe, dressing up in disguises and visiting neighbours while dancing and doing tricks were popular on major feast days.
Modern-day trick-or-treating started off in the early 1920s.
Teachers and students at Alexander Academy planned fun activities for their homeroom. From ghost musical chairs to pumpkin carving. The students learned all the ‘tricks’ on how to carve a pumpkin. Now, let us ‘treat’ our eyes to these gorgeous pumpkins below:
